Christ and Cultural Humility Vision Statement
We strive to be a church that demonstrates cultural humility in each walk of life; recognizing that every one of us comes from a variety of cultural backgrounds, we propose to welcome, value, and celebrate these differences as we strengthen our relationships with God, within the church family, and the community. We strive to raise an awareness of practicing cultural humility in our church as evidenced in the ministry of Jesus.

A Reflection Upon Our Relationship With Jesus

* Do we have our priorities in order?

* Does anxiety over the stuff of life crowd out spending time in the presence of Christ?

* Do we give first priority to spending time in the study of Christ’s teachings, devotions, and meditation?

* Does care giving to others crowd out our devotional life?

* Do we fully understand the gift of hospitality and humility?

* Do we value the choices of others?

C.S. Lewis said, “Humility Is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” Practice humility by intentionally knowing ourselves more deeply while thinking of others more often.

4 Tenets of Christ and Cultural Humility

Understanding other cultures is a lifelong journey that starts with critical self reflection about how we interact with and respond to others. The cultural humility principle aligns with the need to grow in love for God and neighbor.

1. Lifelong learning and critical self evaluation
2. Recognize and change power imbalances
3. Developing mutually beneficial and non paternalistic partnerships with communities.
4. Advocating on behalf of individuals and defined populations

Cultural Humility can help us become better Christians “As a matter of fact, if we insist on staying within our cultural groups and spending time only with people who look and think like us, we will prevent ourselves from discovering aspects of God’s self that otherwise would be revealed to us.”
